Music for Final Draft

We have looked at several different songs that we could use in the final draft of the film. As we have decided that the song used in the first draft didn't fit the film as well as it could have, we looked at the following songs and considered them as candidates for the final draft. The songs we looked at are as following:

I think that this song would go well with the very beginning of our opening as is has a very vague direction at the beginning. The simplness of it would not overshadow the dialogue and it does not sound overly upbeat so it does work with the tone of the film. However the change of the song after the opening section, does get very busy and as such, could become distracting and slightly inconsistent over the course of the film's opening,

This song definitely fits the slow pace needed and does not have a very crowded composition, something very important for our films opening. The problem with using this song for our opening lies in the melody of the song. It builds up to be very uplifting, something that is not at all fitting for our film.

This song does have a tone that is fitting for our film. Is is not especially sad and is far from upbeat and these factors would make it good to use in our film. The reason we haven't used this song however, is that it is a very well known song and could be seen as being a cliche if it were put in the opening of our film. It may also be a little too dramatic for the opening of our film to, having a full orchestra of instruments might confuse the audience if it were played during our opening sequence.

This cover was looked at because it is not too busy and has a very ambiguous tone to it, something that suits our film's opening very much. It is not too fast paced and having it play quietly over the dialogue sections is doable without distracting the audience. Because of all these factors, we eventually decided to use this cover song in our final draft.

Shooting Schedule

This is the shooting schedule. On this table is a list of all the shots that are on the storyboard and details where and where they will be filmed. As there are so many shots in the opening of the film, for the sake of simplifying the schedule, they have been condensed into groups. An example of this is that all of the introduction shots, the ones that set the scene and have only titles, have all been put together. 

Institutions Research

Film 4

Film 4 is a film institution that is owned by the Channel 4 TV corporation that is responsible for the production of a large amount of films. Film 4, while it has produced several big mainstream hits like, 'Slumdog Millionaire', it has also backed several smaller films that don't have such a wide audience as mainstream films. It has produced some darker films like, 'Shallow Grave,' a dark comedy about a group of friends struggling to cope with stealing money from a deceased flatmate, and 'The Double,' a black comedy that focuses on a man meeting his doppelganger face to face. Both of these films have a very niche audience, something that our film will have and so it is appropriate to have film 4 for out film Parallel as it is similar to other films already produced by film 4.

Shot List

There are a number of shots that we want to include in the opening sequence of Parallel. The list of the following shots are all the ones that will  be included at some point throughout the sequence in order to make the overall film a more interesting and varied product.

3. Extreme long shot of the park 
4. Close up of a roundabout spinning on its own
5. Close up, wormseye shot of the man's leg
6. Pan upwards to reveal the man sitting on the bench 
7. Mid-shot that tilts upwards to reveal both personalities sitting on the bench 
8. Close up of mans mouth 
9. Long-shot of both men sitting on the bench 
10. 180 degree shot during conversation 
11. A variety of tracking shots including close ups and long shots whilst the man is walking to the bus stop. 
12. Long shot from across the street. 

All of these shots will be accompanied with dialogue, music and titles.

Timeline of the Parallel Opening

This is the complete timeline of all the shots that will be in the opening sequence of Parallel. The timeline has been made to work along side the storyboard so that all the shots specified there will match up to the time sequences shown in the timeline.

Shooting Schedule of Parallel

This is the shooting schedule of when we will be filming the opening sequence of Parallel. This table includes details of which shots will be filmed when and also details of what props will be required in order to complete each shot. All of the shots will be filmed over the course of several days and all of them are exterior shots. The locations off all the shots also vary little as the opening of the film only needs to take place in one main location, with the main character only moving around within the same general location.

Representation in Parallel

Representation of Characters

Zac/Zabel: These two characters are, in out opening sequence, representing males with schizophrenia. This is not meant to be a broad representation of this demographic however, the realistic approach to portraying this certain character has not been taken and instead is being portrayed in favor of a more visual style. With this in mind, these two characters, or single character depending on the point of view, are shown to be troubled and at conflict with each other due to their opposing personalities, something that isn't uncommon among those being represented by these two characters.

Woman on the Bench: This character is a general representation of a generic adult female. She does not have any defining characteristics in terms of personality and serves only to judge Zac/Zabel from a glance. This does mean that our representation could be seen as having her being portrayed as unnecessarily judegemental however she is supposed to be in fact a general representation of any 'normal' person and to show that the other character(s) are in fact not normal.

Representation of Places

The main location shown in the opening sequence of Parallel is an outdoor park in the center of a non specified city. This general representation is not meant to highlight anything in particular to be special or anything out of the ordinary. The intention of this is to further serve to highlight how the main character(s) are not normal and emphasize this to the audience. The area itself will be shown to have all the characteristic that one would expect to see and allows the audience to believe the setting of the film is believable.

Synopsis of Parallel

•     Bus stop. (Preferably not in use by other people)
•     Trees in the park
•     Pavement beneath the bench
•     Suit
•     Smart shoes and bag/briefcase
•     Medicine bottle and new label
•     Tic Tacs  
•     Coke and Diet Coke

 

Characters:

 

The main characters consist of one man, (Zac) and his other personality (Zabel) that has physically maifested before him. Because of the nature of Zabel, he will be played by the same actor to show how the two characters are two personalities of the same actual person. The only other character to be shown in the opening is a woman whose only roll is to sit down and displace Zabel. The use of her character is to show the audience that Zabel is no more than a apparition and not a physical being.

 

Costume:

 

Zac will be wearing a suit so that he looks, for all intents and purposes, like a normal working man. So that Zabel can be shown as another character, he will wear similar clothes, however he will be wearing a shirt and tie, not the entire suit like his real life counterpart.

 

Location:

 

Our film opening will be located in Admirals Park. We will use the bus stop opposite the park on Rainsford Road, depending on how much filming we can get done and if we stick to the shooting schedule.

 

Audience:

 

We have pitched our audience to be between the ages of 18-30 however not excluding any ages older than that. We didn't think anyone younger than 18 would enjoy or understand our film which is why we set the age to 18. The certificate is 12A.

Risk Assessment

This is a list containing all the possible risks that may occur during our film shoot of parallel. While the possible risk that pose a possible threat to us are not too serious,  it is important that they are still taken down as we need to be aware of the possibility of getting run down by a bus.

Script of Opening Sequence

This is the script for the film opening task. Is has all the dialogue that will be said throughout our opening as well as directions as to what will be actually happening. It was written over the course of several days and tries to use elements of the genre while remaining original and hopefully interesting.
